Aleksandar Bošković rođen je 5. juna 1962. u Zemunu. Osnovnu i srednju školu završio je u Beogradu. Na Filozofskom fakultetu Univerziteta u Beogradu diplomirao je filozofiju, 1990. Magistrirao je antropologiju na Tulane University (New Orleans, SAD) 1993, a doktorirao socijalnu antropologiju na University of St. Andrews (Škotska, Velika Britanija), 1996. Tema doktorata je bila konstrukcija odnosa među polovima u savremenoj antropologiji (Constructing Gender in Contemporary Anthropology), a na osnovu istraživanja među feminističkim grupama u Sloveniji. Postdoktorske studije je završio na University of Witwatersrand (Johannsburg, Južna Afrika), 2003. Član je (“Fellow”) Kraljevskog antropološkog instituta (RAI).

Predavao je na University of St. Andrews (1995), Universidade de Brasília (Brazil, 1999-2001), University of the Witwatersrand (2001-2003), Rhodes University (Grahamstown, Južna Afrika) između 2003. i 2005, kao i na Fakultetu za društvene nauke (FDV) Univerziteta u Ljubljani (2000-2015). Od 2009. je redovni profesor antropologije na Odeljenju za etnologiju i antropologiju Filozofskog fakulteta Univerziteta u Beogradu, a na Fakultetu primjenjene nauke Univerziteta Donja Gorica (Crna Gora) predaje od 2017. Radio je (2003-2019) kao naučni savetnik u Institutu društvenih nauka u Beogradu, gde je osam godina rukovodio Centrom za politikološka istraživanja i javno mnenje. Takođe je (od 2012.) član Uređivačkog odbora Udruženja socijalnih antropologa (ASA), a između 2013. i 2018. bio je potpredsednik Komisije za teoretsku antropologiju (COTA) i član Saveta komisija (Council of Commissions) Međunarodne unije antropoloških i etnoloških nauka (IUAES). Urednik je izdavačke delatnosti Evropske asocijacije socijalnih antropologa (EASA Book Series Editor).
